"We the People" of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union"... so begins one of the most important documents in our history. The Preamble simply begins with who the Constitution is written for and how "We the People"... wanted to establish this new Nation and what are the basic rules of this new Nation along with the fundamental Freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution for “We the People”. Nowhere does it say “I the Government”, no matter which way I read this beautifully written Preamble do I see the phrase “I, or We the Government”.
"We the People”, give in this document, the right for the government to wage War to protect our Freedoms. We have a “Standing Army” authorized to ensure that our Freedoms are protected and over the course of our 200+ year’s history of this Nation we have called on the best, strongest, bravest, young men and women this Nation had/has, into combat, into “harm’s way”, to protect these freedoms.
With these wonderful freedoms we have today I implore you to help protect the rights of our Military and our Veterans. Too many are being denied certain rights and accesses to health care, disability compensation, and denied promises made by our government for their service. This is NOT a recent phenomenon; this mistreatment can be traced back at least to the beginning, if not earlier, than the early years of the 20th Century.
As the Executive Director of Military Families Foundation, Inc./Project “We Remember”, I daily hear the voice of the American Veteran, the Voice of the Reservist, trying to work within the Federal and State systems and running into obstacles rather than the open arms of our States and our Nation who should be trying to HELP these heroes, our Nation's Patriots, rather than discourage them from pursuing the promises, which were made by “We the People”..., via our Government, to them, for sacrifices made in the course of Protecting our Freedoms.
It is our time, “We the People’s” time, to step forward and insist that our promises are proudly kept, to these brave men and women.
May God Bless America,
Vernon Bagley, Executive Director
